The Camrose & District Community Band in Concert with Musical Guests, the CCHS Concert Band and Wetaskiwin Strings!

On Sunday, March 6th, the Camrose & District Community Band, under the direction of Tom Spila, will perform a concert at the Cargill Theatre of the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre in Camrose. The concert begins at 2:00 pm and features musical guests, the C.C.H.S. Concert Band (conducted by Tom Spila) and the Wetaskiwin Strings.

Admission is by donation.

The Camrose & District Community Band and the C.C.H.S. Concert band will perform a variety of selections, from standard concert band literature and marches to jazz and movie themes.

The Camrose and District Community Band was formed in 1983. It was started by a group of 26 interested local musicians, under the guidance of Tom Spila, for the purpose of providing a recreational adult band for the community.Camrose has always been an active area musically, going back to the days of the Rose City Band in the 1960’s. The formation of the Camrose and District Community Band allowed former Rose City Band members, former school players and interested beginners to join in an enjoyable evening of music every week, and to acquire and improve skills many thought were long gone.

The focus of the band is educational, but the group also provides a wonderful social outlet: members thrive musically and make new acquaintances at the same time. Membership is open to anyone over the age of 18 and in fact, has ranged from 18 to over 90 years. The business of the band is handled by an elected executive with help from various committees. The band’s repertoire consists of a wide variety of styles. Performances include local trades shows and events, public concerts and festivals. Membership has grown to over 60 and includes people from all walks of life.

For many years now Augustana students with past band experience have been able to join in the band as full members while receiving university credit for their work.

The group rehearses Tuesday evenings at Camrose Composite High School and is directed by Tom Spila. The season runs from late September to early June. The band welcomes all newcomers so if you are interested, come out to the concert the afternoon of March 6th and feel free to talk to members of the band and the director. Please call 672-1051 for further information.
