The University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus is pleased to announce the appointment of Tom McManus to the position of Head Coach, Men’s Soccer. McManus takes over from departing coach, David McCarthy, who is stepping down this spring in order to spend time with his young family.
McManus’ widespread experience in coaching high-performance soccer includes working with the National (Women’s) Soccer Team, McMaster University, the Winnipeg Fury of the Canadian Soccer League, and most recently at Thompson Rivers University. He has both CCAA and CIS experience. McManus was honoured with three Coach of the Year Awards in Pacwest and took his team to playoffs in their second year of competition in the CIS. Additional honours include an induction into the Manitoba Hall of Fame for coaching the Winnipeg Fury to the Mita Cup Championship.
“We are excited to welcome Tom into our exceptional group of coaches. We are looking forward to his contribution,” says Augustana Campus Athletic Director, Greg Ryan.
McManus is excited for his relocation to Augustana and to Camrose, Alberta. “This sounded like a great opportunity. My wife is from Westlock, Alberta, and we had thought about moving to Alberta to live. My wife is excited about moving there as well.” When asked what he will do first in his new role, McManus says he will first get to know the players and the Campus. “I look forward to meeting with Camrose Minor Soccer as I believe in getting out in the community.”
The Athletics Department would like to thank the selection committee that included graduating student athlete, Adam McKenzie, and Vikings Women’s Soccer Head Coach, Paul Stone. After taking part in the interview process, Adam McKenzie expressed, “Tom’s extensive experience at the top level of University Soccer and throughout the game in general will provide not only the Augustana Men’s Soccer program with growth and development for years to come, but also benefit youth soccer in the City of Camrose and surrounding areas.” He added, “After talking with Tom, I cannot be more excited for the players, the program, and the Campus.”
The department would also like to extend grateful acknowledgement to outgoing Coach, David McCarthy, for his tremendous work in establishing the new Men’s Soccer Program at Augustana, upon its acceptance into the ACAC in 2013.
