YMM Relief Project: Help young Fort McMurray baseball players get back to normal

The University of Alberta Augustana Vikings’ thoughts are with the Keyano College Huskies, their families, and all those affected by the Fort McMurray wildfires. The Augustana Vikings and the Battle River Vikings Booster Society are reaching out to raise enough money to supply three Fort McMurray Minor Baseball teams; the Orioles, Rangers, and Oil Giants with baseballs, bats, gloves (13 per team), baseball shoes and uniforms. The target is now $6000.00.

Our Augustana Vikings colleagues in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference include the staff of the Keyano College Huskies, and Huskies Athletic Director, Wade Kolmel. His family was part of the evacuation process on Tuesday. Wade was in Lac La Biche at ACAC league meetings when the call to evacuate was given. Wade’s wife evacuated in a Toyota Rav 4 with three children, all aged 13 and under. Needless to say, there wasn’t much room for personal effects. His house was in the subdivision (Beacon Hill) that took the greatest hit. His two boys are most upset that their baseball equipment and that of many of their teammates has been lost.

With the help of Dave Borman, his suppliers and expert staff at Battle River Sports Excellence, equipment will be arranged (at cost) in Camrose and delivered to the young Fort McMurray athletes when the craziness subsides.

Wade, being the leader that he is, is most concerned that he get his kids back to normal as soon as possible. For many individuals, that will include sports and recreation activities. No, we can’t make this go away but we can help some kids get back to normal. $1000.00 has already been raised!

*Update: The Camrose Mosquito AA Cougars have now pledged $500.00, matched by $500.00 by Harrison’s Plumbing & Gas Fitting to support the Fort McMurray Mosquito AA Oil Giants who are scheduled to play in Camrose on May 28 & 29. We know that Camrose is always ready to provide the best in hospitality, and especially to these young athletes and their families at these trying times.
