Basketball Alberta is taking an exciting step forward with the appointments of Dave Oldham as the Women’s Director of Coaching Development and Dave Drabiuk as the Men’s Director of Coaching Development.

Oldham and Drabiuk are two of the most accomplished coaches in the province, and have many years experience working with Basketball Alberta. Their appointments are effective on August 1st for Drabiuk and September 1st for Oldham.

“This is a new direction in BA’s coaching development program,” points out Paul Sir, Executive Director of Basketball Alberta.

Until now, Basketball Alberta utilized one Director of Coaching Development overseeing both Men’s and Women’s programming. The position was most recently held by the late Phil Allen, and previously Shawnee Harle.

“We were very fortunate to work with Shawnee Harle for 3 years,” Sir continues. “When she stepped aside, we were blessed to have another coaching legend, Phil Allen, take over. Phil’s passing in January left us with a tremendous void.”

Before guiding the MacEwan University women’s basketball team to its first appearance at Canada West Final Four last season, Oldham coached senior girls for a decade and a half for Spruce Grove Composite High School, transforming the Panthers into a perennial powerhouse. Under his guidance, the Panthers won four city titles over a five-year span from 2011 to 2015, and reached the ASAA 4A provincial championship in each of his last eight seasons.

Oldham is in his second year as head coach of Basketball Alberta’s 17U Girls Team, which will compete at the Canada Basketball National Championships in Regina later this month. He additionally serves as Junior Griffins U17 head coach.

A veteran of both the ACAC and CIS coaching ranks, Drabiuk has led the men’s basketball team at Augustana, based out of Camrose, since 2004. He previously worked as an assistant with the Victoria Vikes, and for both the men’s and women’s teams at Concordia University College in Edmonton.

Drabiuk holds a level 4 NCCP certification in the sport of basketball and is a master course conductor for Alberta. He has filled numerous roles for Basketball Alberta over the years, including Olds Camp head coach, Manager, Basketball Development, provincial team assistant coach and head coach of Team Alberta at the Arctic Winter Games.

“Our go-forward strategy is to have experienced professionals focus on the gender that they have developed their expertise with over their coaching careers,” Sir adds. “Dave Oldham and Dave Drabiuk bring great experience and communication skills to their respective positions.

“Basketball Alberta is very excited to have them both join our team to accelerate the development of our province’s coaches and aid in the teaching of the principles in the ‘Canadian Style of Play.’”
