Augustana continues to be impressed by its students, even years after they have graduated. This week we would like to recognize Augustana alumna Koren Lightning-Earle (’04), who on Thursday September 22, 2016, will receive an Alumni Horizon Award at the Annual Alumni Awards ceremony held at the Northern Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Alumni Horizon Award recognizes outstanding achievements of University of Alberta alumni early in their careers, and we are pleased to announce that Koren, who graduated from Augustana University in 2004, is receiving this honor for her leadership work in the local and national Aboriginal community.

Koren is Cree from Samson Cree Nation, and is not only a leader within the Aboriginal community, but a role model for her peers, as well as younger generations. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (’04) from Augustana University and went on to complete a Bachelor of Laws (’07) at North Campus, as well as a Master of Laws at York University (’16).

Along with her impressive academic success, Koren is committed to enhancing the future of First Nations peoples in many roles within her community, which include president of the Indigenous Bar Association, vice-president of the Kasohkowew Child Wellness Society, co-chair of the First Nations Women’s Economic Security Council and member of the Federal Court Aboriginal Bar Liaison Committee. Koren was also an elected council member for Samson Cree Nation from 2011-2014 and is co-founder of Hub, a community mobilization program to help reduce crime. She is also a sessional instructor at Maskwacis Cultural College, a post-secondary school within the Four Nations of Maskwacis, Alberta. As if the sheer number of her achievements listed isn’t enough, Koren is also married, has two young daughters, and is the sole practitioner at Thunderbird Law. Congratulations Koren!
