Classical and jazz meet in one of the most innovative concerts of the year at the Lougheed Centre in Camrose on Sunday, October 23rd, at 2 pm. Camrose residents Milton Schlosser (classical piano) and Robert Renman (electric guitar) join forces to perform a concert marked by a fascinating contrast of styles, moods, and creative skills.

Robert and Milton have known each other for over 15 years. Their friendship began when Robert, one of Alberta’s top runners, began coaching Milton for running half-marathon races. They soon discovered not only a mutual love of running, but of music. And, they discovered that they also shared a passion for education—Robert in the field of computer science and Milton in the field of classical piano.

In an innovative joint research venture funded by the University of Alberta, Milton and Robert developed a software program that allowed Augustana musicians to track their daily practicing over an entire year. This software was based on the one Robert had already developed for runners and successfully employed by Milton in his half-marathon training.

Today, Milton continues to be active as an instructor and performer based at University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus. Robert is successfully self-employed, having joined together his computer, instructing, and performing skills to offer guitar lessons by video and webcam to a global audience.

In this concert, they will perform together and as soloists. As a duo, they can be heard in a variety of jazz and popular styles, including in their own arrangements of Swedish folksongs. These folksongs give a nod to the homeland where Robert was born and raised before coming to Canada.

As well, Milton will perform some classical piano works, including Beethoven’s famous Pathétique sonata (well-known for its beautiful slow movement) as well as three jazz preludes by George Gershwin. Robert can be heard as a soloist in styles extending from jazz to blues and funk.

Partnering with DiscoverPiano@Augustana and show sponsor Vital Effect, the Lougheed Centre is proud to present Milton Schlosser | Piano on Sunday Oct. 23rd @2pm.
