High Impact Practices in Higher Education:
Research and Application

The Association of American Colleges and Universities identifies ten High-Impact Practices (HIPs), ranging from First-Year Seminars (FYS) to Writing Intensive Courses. HIPs share several characteristics: they facilitate learning outside the classroom, encourage collaboration with diverse others, and require meaningful interactions with faculty and students. The ACURIT conference is itself a HIP, with its focus on undergraduate research and its promotion of interactions between professors and students.
This year ACURIT brings together academics, experts, teachers and students to talk about their expertise and experience with HIPs. Teaching faculty are encouraged to share either their educational research on HIP or their own implementation of HIPs. These could include first-year seminars and experiences, the use of learning communities, collaborative assignments and projects, undergraduate research, service and community-based learning and capstones. Participants are also encouraged to share other practices that could be classified as “high impact.” Students may present their undergraduate research or reflect on their experiences with high impact practices. Individual papers, panels and workshops are welcomed.
ACURIT is a small, intimate conference. The aim of the conference is to create discussion and dialogue amongst scholars and students coming from a variety of academic backgrounds. There are no parallel sessions.
All participants are welcome to attend the conference May 14 – 15, 2019.
