On an unexpectedly snowy Tuesday, Augustana Campus hosted its annual Community Awards Banquet on February 11. This past year, 183 students were the grateful recipients of 233 donor-funded student awards, giving each of them more time to dedicate to their studies and bringing them closer to earning their degree. For us, there’s no better reason to celebrate!
To our award donors, past, present and future: thank you for making post-secondary education a possibility for Augustana students.

Augustana Campus has a long history of community award support. Did you know this year marked the 47th anniversary of the Community Awards program, and that some awards created 47 years ago are still running today?
Dean Demetres Tryphonopoulos, his spouse, Litsa, and Assistant Dean Advancement Debbie McIntosh personally welcomed donors and honoured guests.
This past year, donor-funded awards, scholarships and bursaries provided more than $302,000 in financial support! Over 325 students, supporters and special guests joined us to celebrate this generosity and student achievement.
Once again, our very own Augustana Food Services catered the evening, supported by Sysco Edmonton.
Bree Urkow, Assistant Director, Development shared an expression of thanks and appreciation to the donors gathered.
Each award a donor creates is a commitment—to our campus, to our students, to the education we offer. We celebrated 18 anniversary awards this year and were joined by some of these awards’ representatives at the 2020 Banquet. From left to right: Brenda Smith (Wild Rose Co-operative Association Ltd. Award—45 years), Chris Dinh and Chelsea Price (Camrose dental Health Centre Scholarship—40 years), Jackie Lewsaw (ATB Financial (Camrose) Scholarship—45 years), Dean Tryphonopoulos, Bryan Lynka (Grant Thornton LLP Chartered Accountants Award—30 years) and Brandon Alakas (Ed Friesen Scholarship in English—15 years).
Dean Tryphonopoulos presented Gunvor and Erik Mygind Entrance Citation recipient, Koryn Duncan, with her award.
Dean Tryphonopoulos also presented The Right Honourable Don Mazankowski Entrance Citation recipient, Thaovy Nguyen, with her award.
We were honoured to recognize the 2004 Board of Regents membership as our 2019 Lois Aspenes Award recipient for their hard work and dedication that resulted in the successful merger from Augustana University College to a faculty of the University of Alberta. From left to right: Craig Lee, Luther Haave, Stanley Gooch, Sandra Anderson and Verlyn Olson.
2004 Board of Regents Chair, Stanley Gooch, shared with attendees what it was like leading up to the merger with the University of Alberta and thanked Augustana staff, students and community members for “making [the Board’s] dreams come true.”
Award donors and representatives were able to personally congratulate their student recipients.
Thaovy Nguyen responded to the donors and supporters in the room on the behalf of Augustana student award recipients: “Your contributions have allowed our dreams to flourish and have opened doors to opportunities that would have not been possible otherwise. Through your advocacy for education in the present, it is our turn as students to carry on your legacies as they resonate in our works in the future.”
At the close of the program, students and their donors had the opportunity to take a photo together. Pictured: first recipient of the Marina Palumbo Scholarship in Leadership, Ryan Maisey, and donor Cheryl Van Dusen.

Even after the program had officially ended, some guests stayed to visit further! Thank you to all who were able to join us and celebrate both our donors and students.
